National Hire A Vet Day in Mifflin and Centre Counties

Bob Haefner | PA CareerLink® Centre & Mifflin County | June 2019

If you are a veteran looking for employment and require assistance with the job search process, come speak with the on-site veterans’ representative, and other dedicated PA staff, at your local PA CareerLink®.

When you come, you are encouraged to identify yourself as a veteran so that you can receive Priority of Service. Priority of Service gives veterans priority for receipt of employment, training, and placement services provided under a qualified job training program.

Staff will help you move through the process of registering on pacareerlink.pa.gov and connect you with the programs and services that best meet your individual needs, including free access to the internet for job and school-related activities, assistance with resumes and cover letters, development of an employment plan, local labor market information, civil service employment information, and workshops such as basic computer and job search skills.

The veterans’ representative can provide an overview of information available on VA health care benefits, vocational rehabilitation, VA pensions, education and training options, home loans, VA life insurance, and burial and memorial benefits. Additionally, the veterans’ representative can direct you to key websites providing detailed information about VA benefits, VA disability information, VA GI Bill information, VA vocational rehabilitation information, Commonwealth of PA Civil Service, federal jobs, and PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Staff can further direct you to a variety of other websites that have more information about veterans’ services and programs that provide skill assessments, individual job counselling, labor market information, stipends for training, and job placement assistance.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also provides Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) specialists who offer services to meet the employment needs of disabled veterans and other eligible veterans, with an emphasis directed toward serving those who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, including homeless veterans, and veterans with barriers to employment. The DVOP for Mifflin and Centre Counties is Bob Haefner, a retired Navy Commander.

Each year July 25th is recognized as National Hire a Veteran Day. In honor of this special day, PA CareerLinks® at Centre and Mifflin Counties will hold two coordinated events on July 24th and 25th. The first will take place at the Lewistown Armory on the 24th from 10am to 2pm consisting of veterans support organizations and veteran-friendly employers from the local area. On July 25th PA CareerLink® will team with Hanover Foods Corporation to hold a recruitment event at the Hanover facility in Centre Hall.

PA CareerLink® Centre County, located in the Match Factory in Bellefonte, is open 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Thursday. For more information, call 814-548-7587 or visit us on Facebook.
